The Impact of Life-Cycle Bias on Intergenerational Income Mobility: Estimates for the US and Germany applying a Covariance Structure Model

چکیده

In this study we suggest a covariance structure model to estimate intergenerational income correlations. Within this framework we adjust for lifecycle bias which arises when lifetime earnings are approximated by current income. Furthermore, the suggested empirical strategy is immune to the attenuation bias problem of linear models. This is a particularly desirable feature when only small survey data sets are available. Our estimates for the US of about 0.45 are at the high end of what is reported in the literature. The German estimate of 0.25 is similar in magnitude to the scarce evidence for this country. Reassessing intergenerational mobility in Germany and the United States: the impact of differences in lifecycle earnings patterns

Using longitudinal data on fathers and their children, this study compares the extent of intergenerational mobility in Germany and the United States and introduces an estimation strategy that corrects estimates of intergenerational earnings elasticities for a possible lifecycle bias. In contrast to previous studies, we find that the extent of intergenerational mobility is more limited in the US...

A Study of the Missing Data Problem for Intergenerational Mobility Using Simulations

Applied research on the association between parent and child lifetime income is relying on income data that covers only part of the life cycle which may lead to misleading estimates of the intergenerational elasticity (IGE). In this paper I study the bias of IGE estimates for different missing-data scenarios based on simulated income processes. Using an income process from the income dynamics a...

Department of Quantitative Social Science Understanding income mobility: the role of education for intergenerational income persistence in the US, UK and Sweden

A growing number of studies in several countries over the past twenty years have documented the persistence in incomes across generations, and much of the current literature is seeking to understand the processes driving intergenerational mobility and how these differ across time periods and across countries. Education is commonly seen, just as in sociological studies of social mobility or stat...

Measuring the Impact of Non-economic Exogenous Factors on Industrial Energy Demand in Iran

This paper tries to demonstrate the importance of non-economic exogenous factors (Underlying Energy Demand Trend) when we estimate the industrial energy demand for Iran. The Structural Time Series Model (STSM) approach is used to model these unobservable factors. The Kalman filter and Maximum Likelihood methods allow us to estimate the value of the UEDT. This approach enables us to obtain more ...
